Heads Up

HEADS UP is a comprehensive environmental prevention approach for addressing student substance abuse issues on the campus of Wallace State Community College, Hanceville, AL.

HEADS UP office is located in the Student Center and is open daily Monday thru Friday for students to hang out and as a prevention resource for both students and staff. Students hang out in the office and study, watch movies, each lunch and others just hang out between classes. The office provides a relaxed environment within the college setting promoting healthy peer interactions while receiving information about risks of alcohol/drug use and abuse. It also offers the prevention coordinator a great opportunity to build relationships with students. Students have been very receptive to prevention coordinator's presence on campus from the program's inception.

Goal: Reduce Underage Drinking

Availabe to all Students

HEADS UP has had as its primary goal to address underage drinking & binge drinking among WSCC students. Substance abuse surveys are completed on-line by students each semester to build a database to chart student attitude about drug and alcohol usage. This data is provided to WSCC administration.

Outcome based alcohol and drug PowerPoint presentations are presented by prevention Coordinator to new student orientation classes and to WSCC athletes each fall to meet AJCAA requirements for junior colleges.

HEADS UP also works with WSCC athletic program to help insure that all state policies and procedures with monthly random drug testing are adhered to. The policy of monthly drug testing is a constant awareness reminder kept before the athletes as an ongoing prevention measure. Data is collected and charted on positive findings each year and presented to appropriate administration.

Extra Effort when Needed

Prevention coordinator also works with campus security staff on alcohol & drug incidents and issues that arise to assess any new areas on campus that need additional prevention approaches.

At WSCC president's request, the prevention coordinator serves on the following committees: Health Fair, Green Team, Institutional Health, Safety & Security, and Healthy Campus Initiative. This offers many opportunities to tie in with additional campus activities.

HEADS UP prevention efforts are constantly evolving to meet changing risk factors and prevention needs of the students on campus of Wallace State Community College.
